16 LIV Golf Players Qualify for 2024 British Open Field at Royal Troon
The field for the 2024 British Open, set to be held July 18-21 at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland, includes 16 players who currently compete on the LIV Golf tour.
Following the conclusion of qualifying events which took place earlier this month, the full field for the final men’s major of 2024 has been determined. Among those who will tee it up at Royal Troon are a number of high-profile names now associated with the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series.
Heading the group of LIV Golf competitors is reigning British Open champion Cameron Smith of Australia. Smith produced a scintillating final round to win his first major title at St Andrews in 2022. Other former British Open winners in the field include Phil Mickelson (2013), Louis Oosthuizen (2010), and Henrik Stenson (2016).
Bryson DeChambeau, who captured his first major at the 2024 U.S. Open, also qualified. DeChambeau joined LIV Golf shortly after his Open triumph and was among the players allowed to compete at Brookline despite his new affiliation.
Joining those major champions are other top LIV Golf signings like Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm, Joaquin Niemann, and Abraham Ancer. Tyrrell Hatton, Sam Horsfield, Adrian Meronk and Dean Burmester give the tour additional European representation in St. Andrews.
David Puig and Andy Ogletree also earned spots through qualifying. It will mark Puig and Ogletree’s British Open debuts as both players only recently jumped to the LIV circuit.
With 16 players in the field, LIV Golf will have a notable presence at Royal Troon as the British golfing public and mainstream golf organizations continue to debate the implications of Greg Norman’s controversial new league. How those LIV Golf stars fare in their pursuit of the Claret Jug will also be a major storyline to follow.
The 2024 British Open promises to be an intriguing event with this mixture of old and new faces representing the controversial Saudi-backed circuit on the sport’s biggest stage.
