Donald Trump faces intense scrutiny following US airstrikes on Iran, dubbed “Operation Epic Fury” which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The military action has raised eyebrows after a Pentagon briefing seemed to contradict the White House’s justification, in what detractors are calling an embarrassing episode for the President.

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stood by the operation. She stated to CNN on Saturday: “President Trump is absolutely right to highlight the grave concern posed by Iran, a country that chants ‘death to America,’ possessing intercontinental ballistic missiles.”

During a confidential briefing on Sunday, Pentagon officials cited Iran’s established missile program and proxy networks as proof of a threat to the US.

According to CNN sources, these concerns have been present for years, raising questions about the immediate necessity of the strikes, reports the Mirror US.

CNN’s Zach Cohen reported that briefers confirmed “there was no indication that Iran was preparing to pre-emptively strike U.S. bases in the region in anticipation of some sort of attacks from American-Israeli forces.”

This evaluation contradicts previous White House assertions that intelligence suggested Iran was plotting imminent attacks on US bases.

Three sources also informed CNN that Iran wasn’t developing the capability in question, reinforcing statements made by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi last week.

Trump asserted the regime was producing missiles that “could soon reach the American homeland.”

However, a US Defense Intelligence Agency assessment from last year determined Iran was several years away from developing the intercontinental ballistic missiles necessary to hit the US.

The assessment indicated at the time that there was no intelligence showing Iran was actively pursuing an ICBM program.

The joint military action with Israel triggered immediate retaliation, with Iran launching attacks on US bases and allies across the Middle East, escalating regional instability.

During CBS’s Face the Nation, host Margaret Brennan shared a statement from arms control specialist David Albright, amid mounting concerns about Iran’s nuclear materials.

He wrote: “There should be an immediate priority on rapid response operations to secure nuclear stockpiles right now.”

The host questioned Senator Ted Cruz: “Can you assure the public that it will be secured? And if so, who is doing it if there are no Israeli or US forces on the ground?”

“Look, the quantity of nuclear material-I didn’t say one way or another on that,” he responded.

Cruz alleged that Iran is “building roughly 100 missiles a month”
Cruz continued: “There is no doubt that a year ago Iran had an active ongoing nuclear weapons program. We took out the vast majority of that at the end of the 12-day war.”

He stated the US deployed bunker-buster bombs to demolish underground facilities like Fordo, asserting the strikes significantly delayed Iran’s nuclear program and undermined its leadership during a critical period.

Whilst he acknowledged lacking current intelligence regarding any reconstruction activities, Cruz stated he doesn’t think Iran was near acquiring nuclear weapons, noting: “the Iranians were still hell-bent on rebuilding them.

“And one of the things we are doing right now is taking out their missiles, in particular, the southern missile belt,” he said.

Cruz additionally alleged that Iran is “building roughly 100 missiles a month” and “firing some of them right now at their neighbors at our allies,” contending that Tehran is “attacking virtually every Arab neighbor that surrounds them” to demonstrate “just how malign they are.”
