There is no chance that the retro tennis fans could ever forget the dominance of Margaret Court. The WTA legend, who led the 1960s and 70s era with her countless achievements, has been inclined toward the sport even after retirement. Looking at the current tennis scene where players like Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and others hold the line, there’s still something missing according to the WTA legend.

Tennis legend Margaret Court recently made an appearance on the Tennis Worthy podcast where she shared her thoughts on the current state of women’s tennis. Suggesting that the current players lack the versatile skillset she possessed during her prime, Court highlighted their weaknesses. The WTA legend, known for her record-breaking 24 Grand Slam singles titles, appeared to be dicey about finding successors with comparable abilities to her own legacy.

The 81-year-old, besides giving a generic response, also recognized Coco Gauff as a notable talent. However, lacking confidence in her skillset, Court raised concerns about the young star’s potential, specifically in volleying. “I think there is a potential there with Coco but if you don’t learn to volley when you are little like when you are 8 or 9 like I did you always face the net,” she said. She also raised the alarm against delaying the development of such crucial skills, stating, “I think some of them try to bring it late down the line that’s hard to do it is got to be a natural thing.”

As the current tennis era continues to move ahead with players like Gauff leading the charge, Court’s insights reminded players about the importance of mastering the basics for consistent growth on the professional tennis circuit. Where Gauff is concerned, another tennis sensation of the years past had a different opinion.

Martina Navratilova presents dissimilar thoughts about Coco Gauff
Besides Margaret Court’s thoughts about the current line of WTA stars, former pro-Martina Navratilova also presented her perspective. Back in 2023 when Gauff emerged as the US Open champion, Navratilova mentioned how she along with Iga Switek and Aryna Sabalenka would lead a new era in the sport.
