Gauff fought back from a set down to advance…
Happy’ Coco Gauff achieves major 2025 milestone after defeating Belinda Bencic in China
Coco Gauff advanced to the China Open quarter-finals on Tuesday after defeating Belinda Bencic in a tight three-set contest.
Gauff is a big fan of the Chinese crowds, and she gave them a match to remember on Tuesday, rallying from a set down to defeat Bencic 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.
This was an intense affair, one that boiled over midway through the second set: Bencic claimed Gauff’s team were cheering while the Swiss player was preparing to serve.
Gauff refused to let the drama knock her off course as she fought back from a set down for the second match in a row, following her marathon contest against Leylah Fernandez.
Gauff appears to have steadied the ship after struggling for form during the latter half of 2025, and this form has helped her achieve something significant.
The American has now earned 5,399 WTA points this year, while Swiatek and Sabalenka have earned 8,153 and 9,610 points, respectively.
After the match, Gauff spoke to Sky Sports about her victory and her qualification for the Finals, a feat she has achieved for the fourth consecutive year.
“It was a tough match,” Gauff said.
“I had chances in the first to close it out, but overall, I’m happy with how I fought. She was being really aggressive, and I tried my best.
Happy to qualify once again. I think it’s my third or fourth year in a row, so happy to be back in Riyadh and happy to do it here.”
Amanda Anisimova, another American star, could join Gauff in Riyadh if she continues to advance at the China Open.
The 24-year-old sits on 5,028 points, less than 300 behind Gauff.

Lys has performed superbly throughout the tournament, defeating Ruien Zhang, Iva Jovic and Elena Rybakina.
Meanwhile, Kessler has defeated Han Shi, Elise Mertens and Barbora Krejcikova.
Kessler won the only match she and Gauff have contested, at the 2025 Dubai Championships. Kessler won the match 6-4, 7-5.
Gauff and Kessler recently played doubles together, winning the Canadian Open title while doing so.
