Coco Gauff seals statement 51-minute Wuhan Open win days after brutal thrashing

Coco Gauff bounced back from a brutal loss in Saturday’s China Open semi-finals to seal a statement 6-0 6-1 victory in Wuhan. The No. 3 seed needed just 51 minutes to defeat Moyuka Uchijima 6-1 6-0, barely dropping points on serve and firing down five aces to reach the third round.

It comes just four days after Gauff was blown away by Amanda Anisimova in Beijing. Gauff avoided getting bagelled in both sets but threw in five double faults as Anisimova beat her in under an hour. The 21-year-old vowed to learn from the tough defeat, and she certainly did.
As the No. 3 seed in Wuhan, Gauff got a bye directly into the second round, where she faced qualifier Uchijima. And she immediately set the tone, breaking and taking a 3-0 lead to start the match.

Uchijima then got on the board for the first and last time as Gauff continued her demolition job, winning the last nine games in a row. The American has struggled with her serve over the last couple of years, throwing in too many double faults.

But Gauff dropped only five points on her serve, landed 85 per cent of her first serves in, and most importantly, did not hit a single double fault.

Afterwards, she said: “Obviously today was a good match for me, I played well. Super happy to be back here in Wuhan and moving onto the next round.
“No expectations, it’s the last tournament for me in Asia so I’m just going to enjoy my last week here and go back home and get ready for WTA Finals.”
