Gauff wins the Wuhan Open!
Coco Gauff hailed as the ‘best in the world’ in one particular area after beating Jessica Pegula to win the Wuhan title
Coco Gauff has claimed her third WTA 1000 title after defeating Jessica Pegula in the Wuhan Open final.
Gauff beat American compatriot Pegula in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, to emerge victorious, securing her second tour-level crown of 2025.
The US star did not drop a set throughout the entirety of the tournament, conceding just 25 games, the fewest ever by a champion at the Wuhan Open since the tournament’s inception.
She has now won her first nine hard-court finals, becoming the first woman to achieve the feat in the Open Era.
Naomi Broady reacts to Coco Gauff winning the Wuhan Open
Reacting to her triumph on Sky Sports, former British tennis player Naomi Broady said of Gauff: “She is the best in the world at finding a way. Using what she has got and just getting on with it, and today she stumbled across the tactic of variation. That sliced forehand, the heavier forehand.
Pegula was knocked off rhythm, 23 winners from the racket of Gauff and only 13 from Pegula, which I think is more surprising.
“She hit so few winners when she is normally the more aggressive player from the back of the court.
“Regardless of whether she is playing her best or not, she just finds a way. Her mentality is incredible.”

With her victory, Gauff is now just the second player to secure titles at both WTA 1000 events held in China.
