Taylor Swift Sparks Over $1 Million in Donations in a Matter of Hours
Taylor Swift is directly responsible for over a million dollars in donations to the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Sea Otter Program after her fans sold out a reissue of the viral otter shirt she was recently seen sporting in behind-the-scenes footage from her “The Fate of Ophelia” music video.
According to the aquarium, Swift’s vintage tee originated in the early 1990s. When the organization saw the stir it made upon the release of The Life of a Showgirl, the aquarium quickly got down to business, reconnecting with the owner of the original artwork for a limited re-release made with environmentally friendly water-based ink on 100% cotton.
“After going viral, we saw a wave of $13 donations (Taylorβs favorite number) to support our sea otter program and other ocean conservation work,” the aquarium explained, sending “huge thanks for the love” to the singer’s fans.
The fundraiser went live early on Oct. 16, with 20,000 shirts available in adult sizes and an estimated 2,000 available in child sizes (as those sold out first, Parade could not immediately confirm the initial quantity). By the time of publishing, the adult sizes were sold out, too, and the fundraiser, which offered one shirt in exchange for a $65.13 donation, had racked up just over $1,400,000. According to internet reports, it took about eight hours in total. The purchase link remains open with a backorder option, for now.
It’s far from the first charitable feat linked to the record-breaking musician, although it may be the first one she sparked inadvertently.
Swift is known for her generous nature, often donating to relief effots following major acts of nature or other tragedies, quietly supporting local food banks on her tour routes, and even bonusing out her staff. She has also been known to donate to fans’ fundraisers for things like student loans and hospital bills, and once spent an entire Christmas season carefully selecting gifts to send out to a slew of hand-picked fans, which was lovingly dubbed as “Swiftmas.”
