Adele to make her film acting debut in Tom Ford’s adaptation of Anne Rice novel Cry to Heaven
Adele is saying “hello” to the big screen!
The Grammy winner will make her film acting debut in Tom Ford’s newly announced Cry to Heaven, an adaptation of Anne Rice’s 1982 novel, Entertainment Weekly can confirm.
The move comes after Adele announced that she would be taking an indefinite break from music following a 10-show residency in Munich and a 100-concert residency in Las Vegas last year.
The film role will mark Adele’s first time acting on the big screen. She had a guest appearance as herself on the series Ugly Betty in a 2009 episode titled “In the Stars,” and she performed in character in several sketches on Saturday Night Live when she hosted the show in 2020.
The movie is Ford’s first directorial feature in nearly a decade, his last being 2016’s Nocturnal Animals. The fashion mogul and filmmaker will also write the screenplay and produce through his Fade to Black production company.
Along with Adele, Ford has lined up an all-star ensemble to lead the movie, which is set in 18th-century Italy. The cast will include Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ciarán Hinds, George MacKay, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Paul Bettany, Owen Cooper, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Hunter Schafer, Josephine Thiesen, Thandiwe Newton, Theodore Pellerin, Daryl McCormack, Cassian Bilton, Hauk Hannemann, and Lux Pascal.

The film is currently in pre-production in London and Rome, with principal photography set to begin in mid-January. Its current release date is fall 2026.
The original Rice novel follows two men, a Venetian noble and a castrated singer, whose lives become unexpectedly intertwined as they try to succeed in the world of opera. The tale touches on themes of identity, betrayal, love, and the pursuit of artistic and personal freedom.
