Smutne wiadomości płyną ze Słowacji. W wieku 55 lat zmarł tenisista stołowy Roland Vimi – brązowy mistrz świata z reprezentacją Czechosłowacji i uczestnik igrzysk olimpijskich z 1992 roku.
O śmierci Rolanda Vimiego poinformował portal olympic.sk. 55-latek zmarł w niedzielę 13 kwietnia we własnym domu w Trhovej Hradskej. Co prawda nie podano dokładnych przyczyn jego śmierci, podkreślono jednak, że nastąpiła ona “nagle”.
Vimi jeszcze dzień wcześniej uczestniczył w amatorskich turniejach ligowych rozgrywanych w Dunajskiej Stredzie. Tego dnia rozegrał cztery mecze. Dlatego jego śmierć była była wielkim szokiem w kraju naszych południowych sąsiadów.
Vimi w trakcie swojej kariery reprezentował Czechosłowację. Jego największym sukcesem jest brąz mistrzostw świata w drużynie wywalczony w 1991 roku. Był ostatnim Słowakiem, który stał na podium imprezy tej rangi.

W 1992 roku uczestniczył w igrzyskach olimpijskich. W fazie grupowej tego turnieju przegrał z Polakiem 0:2 w setach z Polakiem Andrzejem Grubą. Turniej ten zakończył na 33. miejscu. W kolejnych dwóch latach na mistrzostwach świata i Europy był już najlepszym zawodnikiem niepodległej Słowacji.
W uznani jego zasług w 2020 roku został wprowadzony do Galerii Sław słowackiego tenisa stołowego. Pogrzeb byłego olimpijczyka odbędzie się w środę. Vími spocznie na cmentarzu w Trhovej Hradskej.
