Amerykanka udanie rozpoczęła spotkanie z niżej notowaną rywalką, bo przełamała ją przy pierwszej możliwej okazji (2:0). Mboko jednak od razu odrobiła stratę, a następnie zadziwiła swoją przeciwniczkę.
Otóż Kanadyjka wygrała łącznie pięć gemów z rzędu. Gauff była bezradna, popełniała błąd za błędem, a jej reakcje tylko potwierdziły, że wpadła w dołek. Tymczasem Mboko z przewagą dwóch przełamań serwowała na zakończenie partii (5:2).

Gauff szybko jednak pokazała, że odcięła się od wydarzeń z premierowej odsłony. Wygrała bowiem trzy pierwsze gemy II seta, w tym dwa przy serwisie rywalki (3:0).
Od tego momentu rozpoczął się koncert przełamań po obu stronach. To premiowało Amerykankę, ponieważ dzięki temu prowadziła 5:2 i serwowała na zakończenie partii. Wówczas rozegrała perfekcyjnego gema, wypracowała trzy piłki setowe i po wykorzystaniu drugiej z nich wyrównała stan rywalizacji.
