Szymon Marciniak sędziował mecz pomiędzy Inter a Barceloną. Już w pierwszej połowie musiał podjąć kilka trudnych decyzji, jak chociażby niepodyktowanie rzutu karnego po zagranie ręką przez Francesco Acerbiego. Za sędziowanie półfinału Ligi Mistrzów zarobił gigantyczne pieniądze.
Szymon Marciniak miał wiele do pracy w pierwszej połowie mecz Inter – FC Barcelona. Doszło do dwóch dużych kontrowersji. Po konsultacji VAR nie podyktował rzutu karnego dla FC Barcelony po rzekomym zagraniu ręką przez Acerbiego. Później podyktował jedenastkę po faulu na Lautaro Martinezie. Zdania na temat obu decyzji są podzielone.

W tym sezonie był to już siódmy mecz Szymona Marciniaka w LM. W fazie ligowej sędziował chociażby hity fazy ligowej PSG — Atletico czy PSG — Manchester City. W rudzie play-off był arbitrem spotkań AC Milan – Feyenoord, a także Atletico – Real Madryt. To wtedy jego decyzja o anulowaniu gola strzelonego przez Juliana Alvareza wywołała ogromne kontrowersje.
