Karol Nawrocki, kandydat na prezydenta z ramienia PiS, to z wykształcenia historyk. Zawodowo zajmował się m.in. opozycją komunistyczną w Elblągu. Napisał o tym trzy książki: “Opór społeczny wobec władzy komunistycznej w województwie elbląskim (1976-1989)”; “Zarys historii NSZZ »Solidarność« Regionu Elbląskiego (1980-1989)”; “Wokół elbląskiej »Solidarności«. Dokumenty”. Ważną postacią w tym kontekście jest wieloletni poseł PiS Leonard Krasulski, wierny członek partii Jarosława Kaczyńskiego, który w Sejmie zasiada już szóstą kadencję.
Leonard Krasulski rozpoczął służbę wojskową w 1969 r., w latach 1971-1976 był żołnierzem zawodowym. Ten fakt przez lata był ukrywany przed opinią publiczną. I to właśnie ze służbą w wojsku ludowym związana jest kontrowersyjna historia — Krasulski został zdegradowany i usunięty ze służby m.in. za kradzież 20 litrów spirytusu.
Po wyrzuceniu z wojska Krasulski zaangażował się w działalność opozycyjną. W latach 80. zakładał “Solidarność” w browarze w Elblągu. Za protest po wprowadzeniu stanu wojennego został skazany na więzienie.
