Coco Gauff confirms she has gone against one of her coach’s wishes straight after winning the Wuhan Open title
Coco Gauff completed a flawless run at the Wuhan Open after defeating Jessica Pegula in the final.
The American did not drop a set en route to hoisting the trophy, conceding only 25 games throughout the tournament, which is the fewest by a champion in Wuhan since the inception of the event in 2014.
Gauff beat Pegula 6-4, 7-5 in the championship match to claim a third WTA 1000 title, and a second tour-level crown of the 2025 season, following her Roland Garros triumph.
Her victory marks the end of a successful Asian swing, having also made the semifinals of the China Open.
Coco Gauff calls out one of her coaches during Wuhan ceremony
In her speech during the trophy ceremony, Gauff had a message for one of her coaches, Jean-Christophe Faurel, who initially did not want her to feature in Wuhan.
She said: “I would like to thank my team. It was a great Asian swing. I am going to call JC out. He originally did not want me to come because I had a tough US Open, but I had to prove him wrong.
“I am a very stubborn person, so maybe he said that on purpose for me to have a good result here.
“But thank you guys. Thank you Richard, Maria, we have a new addition this Asian swing with Joe, he has been a lot of fun, so I appreciate him.
“Then we have Gavin, who is in South Africa right now, also a new addition, but very important to this process and result, so thank you all. I know we have our ups and downs, but this moment makes it all worth it
Coco Gauff confirms she will return to the Wuhan Open next year
Gauff continued: “It’s been an incredible tournament. The improvements that have been made since last year have been very important and make this tournament very easy for us.
“I appreciate all the staff and volunteers and ball kids, everyone that makes this tournament possible, and I look forward to coming back next year.
“I have a huge, huge, huge thank you to all the Chinese fans and all the fans who have supported me here and Beijing.
“You guys have been beyond my expectations. I literally have had to bring an extra suitcase because of all the gifts I have received.
“I think that’s why I have good results here because of the good energy.”
After securing the Wuhan Open, Gauff’s next pursuit will be the WTA Finals, where she is the defending champion
