Donald Trump says he was ‘shot with a bullet’ in the ear
Trump’s presidential campaign said in a statement that the former president is “fine” and is “being checked out at a local medical facility.”
Donald Trump was rushed off the stage with blood on his head and ear after shots were fired in an apparent assassination attempt at his rally in Pennsylvania July 13.
United States Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said Trump is currently “safe” following the shooting, and two senior law enforcement officials told NBC News that the former president is expected to survive.
At approximately 6:15 p.m., a suspected shooter fired multiple shots at the rally’s stage from an “elevated position” from outside the venue, Guglielmi wrote in a statement on X. He said Secret Service neutralized the shooter, who has died.
One spectator was killed and two were critically injured, Guglielmi said in the statement.
After popping noises began ringing out throughout the crowd during Trump’s speech, the former president could be seen reaching with his right hand to touch his ear before he quickly ducked behind the podium.
Agents from his protective detail rushed the stage and screams rang out from the crowd. The popping noises continued while agents tended to him on stage.
The crowd cheered as Trump stood up and pumped his fist in the air.
Hours after the shooting, Trump shared a message to Truth Social, saying that he was shot by a bullet that hit his right ear.
There is a growing concern in law enforcement circles that this may have been a serious attempt on Trump’s life, two senior U.S. law enforcement officials told NBC News Saturday.
Three senior law enforcement sources told NBC News that shots were fired from outside the venue and Secret Service’s security perimeters.
Senior U.S. law enforcement officials also told NBC News the suspected shooter is a male. However, officials did not provide any additional information surrounding the shooter’s identity or motivation.
President Joe Biden gave remarks Saturday evening condemning “political violence,” noting that he attempted to contact Trump but has not been able to speak to him.
“There’s no place for this kind of violence. It’s sick,” Biden said. “It’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. We cannot allow for this to be happening. We cannot be like this.”
At the time of Biden’s remarks, the president noted that he attempted to contact Trump, but had not spoken to him. Hours later, a White House official told NBC News that Biden had made contact with Trump.
Biden is expected to provide an updated briefing from the Department of Homeland Security and law enforcement officials July 14.
Biden spoke with Trump, a White House official said.
NBC News reported that Donald Trump Jr. said he spoke to his father, noting that he’s in “great spirits.”
“He will never stop fighting to save America, no matter what the radical left throws at him,” Trump Jr. said in a statement through his spokesman to NBC News.
Eric Trump shared a photo on X of his father holding his fist in the air with blood on his face and an American flag in the background.
“This is the fighter America needs!” he wrote.
Ivanka Trump also shared a statement on X, writing, “Thank you for your love and prayers for my father and for the other victims of today’s senseless violence in Butler, Pennsylvania. I am grateful to the Secret Service and all the other law enforcement officers for their quick and decisive actions today. I continue to pray for our country.”
She added, “I love you Dad, today and always.”
