Jest to ostatnia debata przed pierwszą turą wyborów. Jest to zarazem debata, którą zgodnie z Kodeksem wyborczym Telewizja Polska ma obowiązek przeprowadzić pomiędzy kandydatami na prezydenta.
Debatę poprzedził sprzeciw ośmiu sztabów wyborczych wobec jej współprowadzenia przez dziennikarkę TVP Dorotę Wysocką-Schnepf, m.in. sztabów PiS i Konfederacji. Wicerzecznik PiS Mateusz Kurzejewski stwierdził w poniedziałek, że debatę będzie prowadziła “twarz najgorszej propagandy TVP w likwidacji”. Jego zdaniem debata będzie “hucpą polityczną, kabaretem i działaniami, które mają pomóc Rafałowi Trzaskowskiemu”.
Według Wojciecha Machulskiego, rzecznika kampanii Sławomira Mentzena (kandydata Konfederacji), Wysocka-Schnepf nie jest dziennikarzem obiektywnym i tworzyła wiele materiałów, które w bezpośredni sposób uderzały w niektórych kandydatów na prezydenta. W ocenie Machulskiego TVP oszukała sztaby przy organizacji debaty, ignorując ich zastrzeżenia.
