Całe derby zostały jednak przyćmione przez dramatyczne sceny spod stadionu. W trakcie zamieszek samochód wjechał w tłum kibiców.
Już przed meczem Espanyol – FC Barcelona było jasne, że możemy dziś poznać nowego mistrza Hiszpanii. Niewiele brakowało, a Barca świętowałaby tytuł jeszcze przed wyjściem na boisko, bo Real Madryt dopiero w samej końcówce doliczonego czasu gry środowego meczu z Mallorcą uratował zwycięstwo (2:1), które przedłużyło jego znikome szanse na mistrzostwo. Piłeczka przeszła na stronę Barcelony – zwycięstwo w derbowym starciu z Espanyolem zapewniało jej mistrzostwo. Podobna sytuacja miała miejsce dwa lata temu przy okazji ostatniego tytułu „Blaugrany”, pod wodzą Xaviego, gdy świętowanie na boisku odwiecznego rywala zakończyło się inwazją wściekłych kibiców „Papużek”.
