Coco Gauff confirms if she’ll ever return to the China Open after being dominated by Amanda Anisimova

Coco Gauff’s China Open campaign ended in a heavy defeat to US compatriot Amanda Anisimova.

In the semifinals of the WTA 1000 event, Gauff lost to Anisimova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, with the US Open finalist reaching her second consecutive tour-level final.

The 21-year-old struggled with her serve once again, tallying five double faults and a first-serve win percentage of 38%.

It was a tough match for Gauff, who had high praise for her conqueror after bowing out of the tournament.

Coco Gauff reacts to her heavy defeat to Amanda Anisimova
“She played well,” said the two-time Grand Slam champion of Anisimova in her post-match press conference.

“I felt like I couldn’t really have a chance of getting a rhythm out there. But a learning experience for the next time.

“I mean, she’s definitely one of the best out of those I’ve played. Yeah, for sure, she and Aryna [Sabalenka] are tough when they’re playing that level of tennis.

“I felt like today, no matter what I did, I just couldn’t get into the match. So yeah, I’m going to take this and learn from it.”

When asked if she will return to the China Open in the future, Gauff replied: “Yeah, for sure. If I’m not injured, I’ll definitely come back. I’ve had and have had great times here. Obviously, today wasn’t my day. But I’m looking forward to next year.”

Coco Gauff assesses her China Open campaign overall
Despite the loss to Anisimova, Gauff claimed four wins during her campaign at the China Open, the most she has strung together at a single tournament since her French Open triumph.

Round one: Bye
Round two: Defeated Kamilla Rakhimova
Round three: Defeated Leylah Fernandez
Round four: Defeated Belinda Bencic
Quarterfinals: Defeated Eva Lys
She said: “Overall [it was] a positive tournament. I had a great time here on and off the court.

“I felt pretty good going out there today. I don’t know, I was practicing great. I just went on court, and she completely took over.

“So yeah, I think there’s a lot of learning experiences. I know what I need to do against players like her in the future. Now it’s all about going back to practice and trying to implement those things.”

Gauff will now make her way to Wuhan to compete in the final WTA 1000 tournament of the season.
