Her antics even got under the commentator’s skin!
COCO CLOCK Coco Gauff’s opponent called out for ‘annoying’ actions in Wuhan quarter-finals as American overtakes Serena Williams
COCO GAUFF’S opponent was called out for her “annoying” tactics as the American overtook the Williams sisters with victory.
Gauff, 21, is in action at the WTA 1000 event in Wuhan, China.
And she booked her place in the semi-finals by beating Laura Siegemund 6-3 6-0.
But despite the one-sided scoreline, the match lasted one hour 25 minutes.
And that was largely due to the German’s winding-up time-wasting antics – which has riled up plenty of tennis stars over the years.
This time, it got under the skin of Sky Sports commentator Colin Fleming
He said: “She does have her own pace of play, doesn’t she?
“Very close to an hour on the match clock here, and we have only played a 6-3 set.
“That includes the long break after the set, she takes her time between points, and already had a time violation.
“Even things like a number of times she has thrown the ball up for the serve and let the toss drop and then bounced the ball a few more times.
It’s not breaking a rule doing that but I raise it because I want to give Gauff credit for how calm and focused she has stayed and is continuing to be in this set.
“It can be annoying to play against.”
Gauff kept her composure, though, to progress safely through to a 12th WTA 1000 semi-final before turning 22.
Both Serena and Venus Williams managed the feat 11 times – while only Maria Sharapova (15) and Martina Hingis (33) have done it more than the reigning French Open champion since 1990 when the format was introduced.
Gauff then booked her spot in the final by beating Jasmine Paolini 6-4 6-3, after the Italian had thumped Iga Swiatek in the previous round.
