Turniej WTA 1000 w Rzymie ledwo się zaczął, a już mamy pierwsze tenisistki, które z powodu problemów zdrowotnych muszą zrezygnować z gry. Dotyczy to m.in. mistrzyni Wimbledonu z 2023 roku, która od roku ma problem z regularną grą.
We wrześniu 2023 roku Marketa Vondrousova (68. WTA) była notowana na szóstym miejscu w rankingu WTA. Czeszka była wtedy po wygraniu Wimbledonu i ćwierćfinale US Open. Wydawało się, że na dobra zadomowi się w czołówce światowego tenisa.
W ubiegłym roku nie radziła sobie tak dobrze, ale grała m.in. w półfinale turnieju WTA 500 w Stuttgarcie, czy ćwierćfinale Roland Garros. Jednak po porażce w pierwszej rundzie Wimbledonu zdecydowała się na operację lewego barku, który od dłuższego czasu uniemożliwiał jej powrót do optymalnej formy. Była to jej trzecia operacja w ostatnich latach. W 2019 i 2022 roku przechodziła operacje nadgarstka, które wtedy także eliminowały ją z gry na kilka miesięcy.
Nie widać końca problemów Markety Vondrousovej
Jednak w tym roku Vondrousova rozegrała zaledwie osiem spotkań, z których wygrała cztery. Ostatni raz na korcie pojawiła się w lutym podczas turnieju WTA 1000 w Dubaju, gdzie przegrała w drugiej rundzie z Mirrą Andriejewą (7. WTA) 5:7, 0:6.
