8 maja 2025 roku konklawe w Watykanie ogłosiło wybór nowego przywódcy Kościoła katolickiego. Następcą zmarłego papieża Franciszka został kardynał Robert Prevost, który przyjął imię Leon XIV. Euforia wśród wiernych nie trwała jednak długo – na jaw zaczęły wychodzić niepokojące doniesienia dotyczące jego przeszłości jako hierarchy w Peru.
Śmierć papieża Franciszka zakończyła epokę
21 kwietnia świat obiegła smutna wiadomość – zmarł papież Franciszek. Miał 88 lat i przez wiele miesięcy zmagał się z poważnymi problemami zdrowotnymi. Ostatni raz przemówił do wiernych w Niedzielę Wielkanocną, kilka godzin przed śmiercią. Jego odejście pogrążyło Kościół i wiernych w żałobie. Pogrzeb odbył się 26 kwietnia i przyciągnął tysiące wiernych oraz światowych przywódców.
Watykan jednak nie mógł pozostawać bez zwierzchnika. Już 7 maja rozpoczęto konklawe z udziałem 135 kardynałów. Zaledwie dzień później, 8 maja o 18:10, z komina Kaplicy Sykstyńskiej uniósł się biały dym. Watykan ogłosił: Habemus Papam.
Nowym papieżem został Amerykanin – Leon XIV
Robert Prevost, nowy papież, pochodzi ze Stanów Zjednoczonych. Urodził się w 1955 roku w Chicago. Dorastał w katolickiej rodzinie w Dolton – jego ojciec był nauczycielem, a matka bibliotekarką. Od dzieciństwa aktywnie uczestniczył w życiu parafialnym. W wieku 27 lat przyjął święcenia kapłańskie, a następnie uzyskał doktorat z prawa kanonicznego w Rzymie.
