W poniedziałek, 21 kwietnia, Watykan poinformował o śmierci papieża Franciszka, który od miesięcy zmagał się z poważnymi dolegliwościami zdrowotnymi. W okresie Wielkanocy jego stan dramatycznie się pogorszył, a mimo intensywnej opieki medycznej, nie udało się zapobiec tragedii. Papież zmarł w wieku 88 lat. Ceremonia pogrzebowa odbyła się 26 kwietnia i zgromadziła tysiące wiernych oraz przedstawicieli duchowieństwa z różnych zakątków świata.

Właśnie dziś został wybrany następca Franciszka. Został nim kardynał Robert Prevost. Przybrał imię Leon XIV.
Urodził się w 1955 roku w Chicago. Już w dzieciństwie wykazywał głębokie zainteresowanie życiem religijnym, co zapowiadało jego przyszłą drogę kapłańską. Dorastał na przedmieściach miasta, w miejscowości Dolton, gdzie osiedliła się jego rodzina – ojciec Louis, pedagog, matka Mildred, bibliotekarka, oraz trzej synowie: Louis, John i Robert. Rodzina Prevostów była znana w lokalnej wspólnocie jako oddani katolicy, zaangażowani w życie parafii jako muzycy, ministranci, lektorzy i wolontariusze.
Święcenia kapłańskie przyjął w wieku 27 lat. Następnie uzyskał doktorat z prawa kanonicznego na Papieskim Uniwersytecie św. Tomasza z Akwinu w Rzymie. Od 1985 roku pełnił posługę w Peru jako misjonarz, proboszcz i wykładowca. Po powrocie do Stanów Zjednoczonych w latach 2001–2013 był przełożonym generalnym Zakonu Świętego Augustyna. W 2015 roku ponownie został posłany do Peru, gdzie do 2023 roku kierował diecezją Chiclayo jako biskup. W 2023 roku papież Franciszek mianował go kardynałem oraz prefektem Dykasterii ds. Biskupów – organu doradzającego papieżowi w sprawie nominacji biskupich. W lutym 2025 roku otrzymał również tytuł kardynała biskupa diecezji Albano we Włoszech. Oprócz angielskiego włada biegle językiem hiszpańskim i włoskim.
