Konklawe rozpoczyna się 7 maja. Wśród 133 uprawnionych do głosowania elektorów jest 23 kardynałów z Azji i 18 z Afryki. Część z nich jest wśród tzw. papabile, czyli potencjalnych następców Franciszka.

Jednym z faworytów jest kard. Luis Antonio Tagle z Filipin. Nazywany “Wojtyłą z Azji” duchowny cieszy się ogromną popularnością na swoim kontynencie. Dr hab. Łukasz Fyderek z Instytutu Bliskiego i Dalekiego Wschodu Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego uważa, że wybór tego kardynała byłby dla Watykanu ryzykowny z kilku względów.
W przypadku wyboru papieża z Filipin zwróciłbym uwagę na konflikt filipińsko-chiński, który się natęża. To byłoby duże wzmocnienie polityczne Filipin, ale też Kościół wybierając papieża z Filipin dużo ryzykuje. Oczywiście, Filipiny mają ogromną tradycję w związku z katolicyzmem. Kościół jest tam obecny od wieków. Jednak wybór takiego papieża może utrudnić relacje Watykanu z Pekinem – wskazuje ekspert.
Dr hab. Fyderek tłumaczy, że “dla Watykanu niezwykle istotne są największe kraje świata, czyli Chiny i Indie”. Wskazuje, że dotychczasowe gesty wykonywane przez papieży w stosunku do tych krajów nie są jednoznacznie oceniane. Wybór kard. Tagle mógłby utrudnić relacje z Pekinem i Delhi. Co więcej, przed papieżem z Azji już na starcie stałoby ogromne wyzwanie.
Przed takim papieżem stałoby przede wszystkim wyzwanie w Azji południowo-wschodniej. Musiałby się skupić na relacjach wokół konfliktu w na morzu południowo-chińskim. Pamiętajmy jednak, że Filipiny to główny katolicki kraj z Azji. Diaspory filipińskie obecne są w wielu innych krajach Azji i Bliskiego Wschodu, co mogłoby przynieść korzyści misyjne Kościołowi, także poza obszarem samych Filipin – tłumaczy dr hab. Fyderek.
