Związek Piłki Ręcznej w Polsce we wtorek oficjalnie przedstawił nowego selekcjonera reprezentacji mężczyzn. Został nim Hiszpan Jota Gonzalez, który zastąpił na tym stanowisku Marcina Lijewskiego.
Marcin Lijewski został selekcjonerem reprezentacji Polski w marcu 2023 roku. Choć legendarny rozgrywający naszej drużyny narodowej miał plan na grę zespołu, jego wizja nie znalazła przełożenia na wyniki. Czarę goryczy przelał fatalny wynik na tegorocznych mistrzostwach świata. Biało-Czerwoni nie wyszli z grupy i zajęli dopiero 25. miejsce.
Po tej imprezie Lijewski pożegnał się z tym stanowiskiem. Związek Piłki Ręcznej w Polsce rozpoczął poszukiwania jego następcy i rozmawiał z kilkoma kandydatami. – Staramy się jak najlepiej dopasować ich do tej grupy, którą mamy – przekonywał w rozmowie z TVP Sport prezes ZPRP Sławomir Szmal.

Wybór padł na Jotę Gonzaleza, o czym już jakiś czas temu poinformowały media. Hiszpan oficjalnie został przedstawiony jako nowy selekcjoner reprezentacji Polski podczas wtorkowej konferencji prasowej. Jego kontrakt będzie obowiązywał do 2028 roku, a jednym z nadrzędnych celów jest awans na igrzyska olimpijskie w Los Angeles.
53-latek ma bogate doświadczenie. Od 2023 roku Hiszpan pełni funkcję trenera Benfiki Lizbona, a wcześniej przez pięć sezonów był asystentem Raula Gonzaleza w Paris Saint-Germain. Wcześniej, przez ponad dziesięć lat, prowadził zespół CBM Logroño La Rioja, z którym sięgnął po cztery medale w lidze ASOBAL i dwukrotnie został uhonorowany tytułem trenera roku, w latach 2011 i 2013.
Pierwszym wyzwaniem dla nowego selekcjonera będzie zakwalifikowanie się na mistrzostwa Europy w 2026 roku. Pierwsze dwa spotkania, w których za grę Polaków odpowiadał tymczasowy trener Michał Skórski, przyniosły kiepskie wyniki. Najpierw Biało-Czerwoni zremisowali z Portugalią 36:36, a później przegrali z tym rywalem 27:33.
Kolejny mecz w ramach walki o przyszłoroczne Euro nasi szczypiorniści rozegrają 8 maja, kiedy zmierzą się na wyjeździe z Izraelem. Będzie to debiut Gonzaleza w roli selekcjonera.
