Watching what has unfolded in Los Angeles over the past week has been shocking, devastating, and numbing, all at the same time. Even to those of us watching from the safety of our homes, the loss and anguish our friends and fellow citizens are experiencing are deeply palpable.
For me, the black wall of smoke hovering over the Pacific Palisades triggered horrific memories of a similar ominous plume of darkness rising from the fire in Lahaina, Hawaii, on August 8, 2023. At the time, the smoke covered the sun and half the sky. None of us could imagine the apocalypse of death and destruction that would come.
It also makes me think of the families in a town called Paradise, California, about 500 miles north of Los Angeles. Their entire town was incinerated by a wildfire in 2018. Seven years later, they are still navigating the trauma of it all. It is a reminder that rebuilding psychologically and spiritually takes a long time—often longer than the physical reconstruction.
Tonight, I’m preparing dinner for people whose lives have been affected by the fires and are taking respite at my home. We will be giving thanks for the refuge many have been able to find after being forced to leave their homes; praying for those having to process unimaginable loss; and expressing our gratitude to the firefighters who continue to put themselves in harm’s way. I hope that, if you can, you’ll do the same.
