What Coco Gauff did on her forehand during the Wuhan Open final which left Jessica Pegula totally confused
Coco Gauff secured the 11th title of her career at the Wuhan Open, defeating American compatriot Jessica Pegula in the final.
Gauff beat Pegula, 6-4, 7-5, completing a flawless run at the WTA 1000 tournament, having not dropped a set throughout the entirety of her campaign.
The two-time major champion was tested by her compatriot, going down a break in the second set, but came through to seal her second tour-level crown of the season.
For Pegula, it is another near miss on the Asian Swing, following her semifinal exit at the China Open.
The real standout factor’ in Coco Gauff’s final performance
The world number six was left confused by Gauff’s forehand, which Sky Sports commentator Jonathan Overend noticed.
I think that line of attack with the forehand today has been the real standout factor,” said Overend.
“It has either been the slice which has kept it so low and spinning away from Pegula or the higher ball, with so much net clearance and spin as well. Pegula has not known what is coming next.”
Former British tennis player Naomi Broady added: “I think that is a great way for Gauff to approach the forehand.
“With her grip, it will be tough for her to hit the top spin when the ball stays low, so why not hit the slice back? And combine that with the big forehand and the extra spin
